Staff Competencies

Education, practice, and assessment go hand-in-hand. Attending courses and performing procedures are great ways to get the education and practical components of a nursing practice. However, to ensure a correct and complete understanding of a nurse's individual skills and knowledge requires an assessment component. We suggest the use of compentencies.

According to the SGNA, "a competency can be defined as the ability to adequately perform a role/task with desirable outcomes under varied circumstances. Competencies contain the key critical thinking skills, technical skills, and interpersonal skills that enable someone to perform any given job successfully. Grouping of these skills into appropriate categories and linking them to sets of behavior have enabled many health care organizations to implement the use of pre-defined competencies to hire, train, develop, and evaluate employees. The competencies defined by the organization assist in deriving the performance management system".
